### Modernizing Storage for Mission-Critical Aviation Systems

When airspace changes, pilots and flight planners need reliable access to timely information. For one government aviation program, modernization meant more than replacing aging storage. It meant regaining control over uptime, cost, and infrastructure planning for systems that support national airspace communications.

The organization’s legacy Oracle RAC database environment was aging, approaching end of life, and backed up using Oracle’s proprietary Recovery Manager software. Uptime had become a central concern.

To avoid the “VMware tax” and its associated costs, the customer integrated TrueNAS into a comprehensive solution that maintains Oracle DB performance without the software ransom. This transition provided the resilient enterprise storage platform they required, streamlining production, backup, development, and test environments into a single system that eliminates unnecessary complexity and unpredictable refresh paths.

The program turned to TrueNAS for production and backup storage, then expanded that trust across the full environment.

### Built for Production, Backup, Dev, and Test

The aviation program standardized on four identical TrueNAS M40-HA systems, each delivering over 600‌‌ TiB of usable capacity across production, backup, development, and test. Combined, the environment now provides 2.4 PiB of usable capacity, supporting Tier 1 and Tier 2 block storage, backup, and non-production workloads.

The environment supports iSCSI and NFS, connects to 11 ESXi hosts, and serves more than 100 virtual machines, with an average of 300+ connections to TrueNAS. Production replicates to the backup system, while development and test operate independently, giving the team separation where it matters and consistency where it helps.

### Resilience Without Unnecessary Complexity

For mission-critical aviation infrastructure, downtime is not a routine inconvenience. It is an operational risk. The program required 99.999% uptime, with an allowable downtime target of roughly five minutes per year. Critical failover targets were set at 60 seconds or less, with an absolute ceiling of one to two minutes.

TrueNAS helped the team meet those requirements through a resilient architecture built around dual parity, replication between active and standby systems, crash consistency through ZFS write intent logs, and no acknowledged client commits until data is written to the system. The result is an infrastructure foundation designed to keep critical systems operational under pressure.

### Predictable Operations, Stronger Control

By moving to TrueNAS, the program gained a more predictable storage foundation, reducing hardware and support burden while standardizing production, backup, development, and test on one trusted platform.

TrueNAS also helped streamline operations by moving NFS shares off server hosts and directly onto NAS. That shift simplified workflows, improved application performance and protection, and reduced downtime exposure for the teams responsible for keeping the environment running.

Instead of managing storage around an aging platform and inefficient processes, the team gained greater control over its storage operations, economics, and long-term infrastructure planning.

### A Platform Trusted Enough to Refresh Without Competition

The strongest proof point may be what happened next. After five years of using [TrueNAS M-Series](https://www.truenas.com/m-series/) across production, backup, development, and test, the team refreshed all four 1 PB-class M40-HA systems without competition.

That decision says more than a benchmark alone could. For an organization responsible for critical aviation communications, trust is earned through stable operations, predictable outcomes, and confidence under pressure.

TrueNAS gave the team resilient storage, transparent economics, and the operational control to support modernization without rebuilding around a new vendor model.

Instead of managing storage around an aging platform and inefficient processes, the team gained greater control over its storage operations, economics, and long-term infrastructure planning.
