After Dropbox ended unlimited storage, this Southeast video-production studio moved 128TB of 4K footage onto a self-hosted TrueNAS system with over 300TB of usable capacity.

The studio blends broadcast-style workflows with real-time green screen production, built around a simple promise to clients: videos as fast as you can talk. Behind the scenes, the infrastructure was stretched thin: massive 4K files, an aging NAS unit, and a Dropbox account creeping toward its limit.

### Then Dropbox killed unlimited storage.

“We had 128 terabytes stored and they told us we’d have to start paying \$5 per terabyte per month. That would’ve been over \$1,000 a month. That wasn’t happening.”

### One platform, more workloads

The team moved to [TrueNAS](https://www.truenas.com/) and now runs over 300 usable terabytes on it. But storage capacity wasn’t the only thing that changed. The platform runs more than files.
“We’re able to run Raspberry Pis connected to VMs on our NAS that run the entire studio. That flexibility really matters.”

Virtual machines, AV control software, and file storage all run on the same platform. No separate server for utilities, no separate system to patch and maintain — one operational surface instead of several.

### Rock Solid Foundation with Tight Integrations

The TrueNAS platform runs on OpenZFS, which gives the team [self-healing data integrity and checksumming](https://www.truenas.com/blog/self-healing-storage-when-every-bit-matters/) that catches corruption before it becomes a lost file. Drive failures don’t put footage at risk.

Integration with their camera recorders lets them record straight to storage over 10-gigabit networking, so editors start cutting within minutes of filming, working off files that are still growing.

“We don’t drop recordings anymore. That alone is huge.”

### Control your Own Cloud

With the [savings over Dropbox](https://www.truenas.com/cloud-storage-alternative/), the director is already making plans to expand the infrastructure for even more redundancy and protection against disasters. With available city fiber at multi-gigabit speeds, he’s scoping out spots to house an off-site backup node.

“We used to worry: did we copy the files? Did we format too early? Now we hit record and know it’s there. That peace of mind has changed how we work.”

We used to lose recordings. Now, we never do. Everything goes straight to the storage platform.

### FAQs

**Is TrueNAS a good alternative to Dropbox for video production teams?**
For studios storing large volumes of 4K footage, [moving from Dropbox to on-premises TrueNAS storage](https://www.truenas.com/cloud-storage-alternative/) removes the per-terabyte subscription cost and puts the hardware under the team’s own control. This studio went from a projected \$1,000+/month in Dropbox fees to a one-time infrastructure investment.

**Does moving off Dropbox mean giving up cloud-style backup?**
No. Teams typically pair on-premises storage with their own off-site replication target instead of depending on one vendor for both primary storage and backup. This studio, for example, is scoping an off-site backup node over city fiber.

**Can a NAS platform run more than file storage?**
Yes. Platforms like TrueNAS can run virtual machines and applications alongside file storage on the same hardware, letting a team consolidate utilities, like AV control software, that would otherwise need a separate server.
